Origin

Axolotls are native to a single, shrinking network of freshwater lakes and canals — Lake Xochimilco — near Mexico City. They are critically endangered in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss, pollution, and introduced predator species.

Behaviour

Axolotls are generally solitary, mostly inactive during the day, and more active at night. They rely on smell and vibration more than sight to locate food. Handling should be minimal — their skin is delicate and easily damaged.

Regeneration

Axolotls are one of the only vertebrates capable of fully regenerating limbs, portions of the spinal cord, and even parts of the brain and heart — a major reason they are widely studied in regenerative medicine research.
